Style How to: Design a Budget-Friendly Small Outdoor Space

Our backyard has become our new getaway from the indoors and sometimes from each other. I live with three teens so I think you can understand the need for some social distancing among family. 🙂 I love being outdoors and I love nature so I wanted to create a space that incorporated nature’s color and ultimately, I wanted to create a space that is an elixir of  happiness and relaxation. Here’s how you can too.

  1. Start with a foundational piece– I wanted a basic patio set that offered extra seating and relaxation in a simple color palette. Basic black and white gives you the opportunity to add color and accessorize with other pops of color. I was so excited to order this set but I forgot it doesn’t come assembled. Thankfully, I employed one of my children to help me put it together and it wasn’t hard at all! It was fun bonding time!

2. Add Color– If you’re a fan of color, you can add a splash with an accent piece like this vibrant rug.Catenya McHenry assembles the Lark Manor 4 piece sofa and outdoor furniture set from Wayfair

3. Add Texture– I wanted to add extra seating but incorporate texture as well. Adding texture boosts the design aesthetic and creates more visual interest- drawing in a certain ambiance. This ottoman was perfect in helping me accomplish my goal.

4. Mix Bold Print+Pattern– Building on the black and white color palette, you can continue to expand on those two hues by accessorizing with bold print and pattern. The stripe pillows pair wonderfully with the bright orange tassel pillow, which also pulls out a pop of color from the rug.

5. ReStyle + ReFresh– If you ever get bored with the colors, you can always swap out the pillows, saving tons of money on an entirely new patio set. You can also accessorize with accent pieces you already have inside your home. This flower center piece is one I’ve had for a while now from Home Goods. The glass vase is also another piece I already had. Both tie in perfectly with the entire design.

6. Add Versatile Seating– Sunshine poufs are perfect little pieces that are multi-functional as extra seating and an ottoman foot rest. In the future, this space is perfect for an outdoor dinner party or get together with friends.
