According to PsychCentral, narcissistic abuse affects over 158 million people in the U.S. If you’ve experienced a toxic narcissistic relationship, that number may not surprise you. While relationships with narcissists are emotionally and psychologically damaging, separating and leaving abusive relationships can be just as difficult to navigate. As written in Married to a Narcissist book, abusers gaslight and manipulate their victims, working tirelessly to maintain control, especially when survivors say ‘no,’ show signs of mental strength, and create boundaries. Many survivors feel guilty about wanting to leave and many stay because of the comfort and fear that exists in co-dependent relationships. Staying can be crippling and staying silent can be life-threatening.
