Beauty: Dirty Little Secrets About Your Mascara

Batting your eyelashes is easy when you have rows of magical tubes to choose from. Whether you want volume, curled lashes, longer ones, thicker, dramatic eyes or something more subtle for day or night, it’s all just a reach away at the department stores and drugstores- in a myriad of price points. But once your favorite tube leaves the store shelves, its shelf life at home is ticking and there are some things you should definitely avoid. We turned to our L.A.- based licensed esthetician consultant Natalie Banks, for the do’s and dont’s of mascara.

DON’T:

  1. Sleep In Your Mascara– Mascara coats your lashes. It dries and hardens. Natalie says if you sleep with it on, it will break off your lashes. Infection is also possible.
  2. Pump The Wand– Pumping the wand puts air in the tube and that friction brews bacteria. Instead, insert the wand once for each eye.
  3. Keep Your Mascara More Than 3-6 Months- If you’re using it regularly, its shelf life is even shorter at three months.

DO:

  1. Use a quality eye makeup remover – Natalie recommends affordable brands like Vaseline or Ponds.
  2. Clean the mascara applicator brush – be careful though not to use harsh cleansers on the brush. You can’t afford any kind of fungus or bacteria in your eyes.
