Vintage pieces harbor deep, classic character. There was an era when designers gave more attention to detail and were more concerned about creating pieces that were not only beautifully designed but also well-constructed and less mass produced. Designers and dress-makers of past decades were more careful about the process and I believe they approached clothes- making with more patience.
This is not to say that today’s modern and contemporary collections lack detail, patience and creativity but I think vintage has more interesting elements of passion that are expressed and sewn into each piece. I love the stories that live in vintage pieces and I love the mystery of who may have worn them.
Another reason I’m obsessed with vintage clothes is because I think they still have incredible value and deserve a second life. I have a special place in my heart for repurposing+restyling+rewearing, so vintage is perfectly aligned with my fashion sensibility.
I nabbed this sundress recently at the Torrance Street Faire in Torrance, California. As soon as I pulled it off the rack, I knew she was coming home with me- I just had to make sure it fit. The common caveat with vintage is that it may have been custom made for a girl with specific measurements, so trying on is a must!
The bold print is dancing in character and the striking hues combine a summer+fall vibe. The fabric is a sturdy cotton/linen blend. It can definitely transition into Fall by layering a mock neck or blazer but for this summer look, I only needed a few other gold accessories to polish it off.
Vintage Style Tips:
- Always try on (over your outfit-if possible). A piece may have been hand-sewn for one person and if it doesn’t fit, there’s a high probability you won’t be able to return it after you take it home.
- Always dry clean. Quite often, vendors purchase from estate and or garage sales and you don’t know the past life of a piece. Starting with a clean slate is always smart to avoid any skin breakouts.
